Calling Community Food Partners!
Are you interested in making community gardens, urban farms, locally-made products, and farmers markets more available in in Broward County? On September 25th, from 12:30-4:00 P.M., you are invited to participate in a workshop about making Broward County more healthy and livable through planning community food systems. Although we have city and county departments responsible for our transportation system, water & sewers, parks, and school system, we have no systems in place to guide, plan, or maintain our food system, which of course, is essential to life and our health.
Last year, TOUCH (Transforming Our Community’s Health) convened the Broward Local Food System Community Roundtable, which brought together sixty community members interested in networking with other like-mined folks dedicated to improving our food system. From that gathering, we learned that our food system is missing vital strategies for cost-effective distribution for local products, and policies that nurture local food production and processing.
This year, TOUCH will convene the Broward Community Food System Roundtable -Round II, which will engage 30-40 people in activities to come up with goals and strategies for a County-wide community food system plan. In the first part of the program, you will be able to ask questions from a panel of three community planners and three local food practitioners about how we can improve Broward County’s food system.
In the second part of the program, you will participate in a hands-on activity with the panelists that involves coming up with strategies for improving healthy food access, affordability, and demand for Broward County. The ideas you come up with will become part of TOUCH’s framework for improving equable healthy food access, which involves its collaboration with planning departments and community redevelopment agencies throughout the County.
Round II will be hosted and co-facilitated by Gary Rogers, the Executive Director of the City of Lauderdale Lakes Community Redevelopment Agency. Dion Taylor, the founder and owner of RawOne will also facilitate. In addition to being a successful local food entrepreneur, Dion has many years working with food justice nonprofits, and is currently collaborating with the Dania Beach Community Redevelopment Agency to write a business plan for the Dania Beach Market Garden, PATCH (People’s Access to Community Horticulture). This is a rare opportunity for food system change- agents to work together in a constructive forum.
We sincerely hope you can join us! Please register with the link in the box below.
